§ 01 · Key facts

Quick facts on the C2 Proficiency.

§ 02 · What it is and what it is for

One certificate. Nothing above it.

One summit. The highest certificate there is.

The Cambridge C2 Proficiency (formerly CPE, Certificate of Proficiency in English) certifies the C2 level of the Common European Framework, the highest that exists. It is issued by Cambridge University Press & Assessment and is the oldest English exam still in use in the world: held since 1913. It attests that you operate in English with the precision and nuance of a trained professional, not just with fluency.

In Spain it is the certificate that makes the difference where C1 is already expected: teaching of and in English, philology and translation, professorships and lectureships, public exams that award points for C2 as a merit, and international profiles where English stops being a requirement and becomes a credential. Whoever holds it never certifies their English again in their professional life.

Pillar · 01

The top of the scale

There is no higher English certificate. Where a C1 competes, a C2 decides.

Pillar · 02

Four skills face to face

Real Speaking in a pair before two examiners, Writing marked by Cambridge examiners. No automated shortcuts at the level where nuance matters most.

§ 03 · Exam format

Four papers. The hardest weighs double.

At ULIC you have it on paper and on computer, depending on the sitting.

Structural note

Reading and Use of English is worth 40% of the mark, double any other paper. And within Writing, the Part 1 essay has no equivalent in B2 or C1: it summarises and evaluates two other texts in 280 words. It is the task where it shows most clearly who arrives with a real C2 level and who arrives with a stretched C1.

Practical note

At this level the exam does not ask whether you understand, it asks whether you can tell the difference. The Reading options differ by tone, irony or implication, not by content. Effective preparation is not doing more tests: it is reading and listening to dense native material for months. That is why the format is termly, not intensive.

§ 04 · Scoring system

The scale reaches 230. The pass starts at 200.

What each paper assesses and where Spanish speakers slip

Paper What it assesses Common trap for Spanish speakers
Reading & Use of EnglishPrecision and nuance in an educated registerChoosing the "generally correct" option instead of the exact one in context: here they all sound right
WritingSynthesis, critical evaluation and command of text genreSummarising the two Part 1 texts without evaluating them: half the task is offering a reasoned view
ListeningTone, irony, attitude and implicationCatching WHAT is said but not WHAT is implied
SpeakingNaturalness, precision and the ability to argue on the spotSounding rehearsed: at C2, memorised fluency is penalised against real conversation

Special rule · the safety net narrows

In B2 First you can leave with a B1; here, between 180 and 199 you receive a C1-level certificate, but below 180 there is no certificate. You do not come to the C2 Proficiency to try your luck: you come with a solid C1 already achieved.

§ 05 · Certificate validity

Cambridge gives it no expiry.

Valid indefinitely.

The C2 Proficiency certificate has no official expiry date set by Cambridge. Once obtained, the document is valid indefinitely.

But that is only half the story: who decides whether to accept your certificate, and for how long, is the institution, company or university that asks for it, not Cambridge or ULIC. Most public exams and selection processes in Spain accept it with no age limit; international mobility programmes and some bodies do require a maximum age, usually 2 years.

Important

In practice, the C2 is the certificate you will need to renew least often: it is the last English exam most candidates ever take.

Confirm the exact requirement with whoever demands it before assuming it is valid forever in your case.

§ 06 · The C2 Proficiency in Spain

Price, sittings and real uses.

Price (ULIC) 229.50 The official candidate fee, arranged with ExamsOne (ES945), no surcharges. The market reference runs around 250 to 290 € by centre and format. Late entry adds a 35 € surcharge.
Sittings Several / year Fewer than B2 First and C1 Advanced. Registration usually closes 4 to 6 weeks before on paper. Ask us for the Madrid dates and we confirm your place.
Results 26 sem Between 2 and 3 weeks on computer and 4 to 6 on paper. The physical certificate arrives later by post.
Main uses in Spain

Where C1 is already what is expected.

Top language accreditation in public exams and teaching pools, a requirement or merit in philology, translation and interpreting, university teaching and bilingual programmes, and a distinguishing credential in international professional profiles.

Practical note

With few sittings a year, missing the deadline costs months, not weeks.

If your goal has a date (a public exam, an academic year), count backwards from the sitting: at least a term of preparation plus the registration deadline.

The price is ours, not a reference

We arrange your enrolment with ExamsOne, the official exam centre (ES945). You pay the official candidate fee, no surcharges: 229.50 €.

When to choose the C2 Proficiency

When the C2 is a named merit or requirement (teaching pools, philology, translation), when you already hold a solid C1 and want to close your English accreditation for good, or when you compete on ground where C1 is the norm and you need what is not.

When not to choose the C2 Proficiency

When your real requirement is a C1 (the C1 Advanced is cheaper to prepare and, with 200+, also certifies C2), when you need to certify a level in weeks (the New Linguaskill certifies up to C2 in days, with no fixed sitting), or when your destination is a foreign university or a visa that asks for IELTS by name.

An honest read

Maybe you do not need this exam. And we will say so.

A C1 Advanced at 200 or more already certifies C2 on the Cambridge scale, and the New Linguaskill reaches C2 in days, with no fixed sitting. We prepare and examine both at ULIC. If your case fits one of them better, we would rather tell you before you invest a term in the wrong exam.

Compare before you decide

See the guides for the other two paths.

§ 08 · Who is it for?

Check whether the C2 Proficiency fits your goal.

It is for you if

The C2 fits.

  • +You are sitting a public exam or work in teaching and the C2 counts as a merit or sets you apart in the pool.
  • +You come from philology, translation or interpreting, where the C2 is the profile's natural accreditation.
  • +You already have the C1 Advanced (or a solid equivalent level) and want to close your English accreditation for life.
  • +You work in an international environment where C1 is expected and you need the credential that decides.
  • +You teach English and want the certificate that backs your authority before students and schools.
Consider another option if

Better another path.

  • ·Your requirement says C1: the C1 Advanced covers it and, with 200 points or more, also certifies C2.
  • ·You need the accreditation within weeks: the new Linguaskill reaches C2 with results in days.
  • ·Your destination is a foreign university or a visa that names IELTS or TOEFL.
  • ·Your real level today is B2-C1: enrolling for the C2 without the foundation is paying to fall just short, because below 180 there is no certificate.

§ 10 · Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about the C2 Proficiency.

Cambridge sets no expiry on the certificate. Who decides whether to accept it, and how recent it must be, is the institution you present it to. Most public exams in Spain accept it with no limit; some international programmes ask for results under 2 years old. Confirm it with whoever requires it.
Between 180 and 199 points you receive an officially valid C1-level certificate. Below 180 no certificate is issued: the C2 safety net is narrower than the B2 First's.
The three bands of a C2 pass: Grade C (200-212), Grade B (213-219) and Grade A (220-230). All three certify C2; the Grade appears on the certificate.
It is not a formal requirement, but it is the realistic baseline: the C1-to-C2 jump is the biggest in the whole scale. We recommend a level test before fixing a sitting.
Yes: a 200 or more on the C1 Advanced certifies C2 on the Cambridge scale. The difference is the name of the qualification: for pools and merits where "Proficiency" counts as such, the certificate itself remains the reference. If your process accepts the scale score, the C1 Advanced may be enough: read it before deciding.
The written papers last 3 hours and 40 minutes in one session. Speaking, around 16 minutes per pair, is scheduled separately.
Yes, with another candidate and two examiners. Each candidate is assessed individually on their own performance, not against their partner.
With ULIC, the C2 Proficiency fee is 229.50 €, with a 35 € surcharge for late entry. The market reference runs around 250 to 290 € by centre and format, so you pay the official centre fee with no intermediaries.
On computer, in 2-3 weeks; on paper, in 4-6. The physical certificate arrives later by post.
The content and scoring are identical. What changes is the logistics: the computer format usually has faster results and shorter registration deadlines.
Fewer than for B2 and C1: several a year in Madrid depending on format. With registration deadlines of 4 to 6 weeks, missing out costs months.
You are given two texts of around 100 words with differing positions and must summarise them, contrast them and evaluate their arguments in 240-280 words. There is no equivalent task in B2 or C1: it is the real gauge of C2 level.
Not with reliable results. At ULIC we prepare the C2 with the Termly Course or with long-haul One to One, because at this level the difference is made by sustained exposure to the language, not last-minute exam technique. That is why we do not even offer the intensive for C2.
Twice, in all four parts.
A valid DNI, NIE or passport, the same one you used to enrol.
Yes. We handle your registration with ExamsOne, the official Cambridge exam centre (ES945). Write to us: we confirm sitting, deadline and candidate fee, and you prepare with us if you like.
§ 11 · Prep at ULIC

Two long-haul formats. No intensive.

The C2 is not won with exam tricks: it is won with months of exposure to dense English and expert correction of Writing and Speaking, the two papers where a stretched C1 is exposed. That is why for this exam we offer the two long-haul formats, and deliberately not the pre-exam intensive.
