C2 Proficiency. The highest certificate Cambridge can issue.
The format, scoring and sittings of the Cambridge C2 Proficiency explained plainly, plus the long-haul training an exam demands when it cannot be passed with last-month technique. You prepare with us and we handle your registration with ExamsOne, the official exam centre (ES945).
Quick facts on the C2 Proficiency.
One certificate. Nothing above it.
One summit. The highest certificate there is.
The Cambridge C2 Proficiency (formerly CPE, Certificate of Proficiency in English) certifies the C2 level of the Common European Framework, the highest that exists. It is issued by Cambridge University Press & Assessment and is the oldest English exam still in use in the world: held since 1913. It attests that you operate in English with the precision and nuance of a trained professional, not just with fluency.
In Spain it is the certificate that makes the difference where C1 is already expected: teaching of and in English, philology and translation, professorships and lectureships, public exams that award points for C2 as a merit, and international profiles where English stops being a requirement and becomes a credential. Whoever holds it never certifies their English again in their professional life.
The top of the scale
There is no higher English certificate. Where a C1 competes, a C2 decides.

Reading and Use of English is worth 40% of the mark, double any other paper. And within Writing, the Part 1 essay has no equivalent in B2 or C1: it summarises and evaluates two other texts in 280 words. It is the task where it shows most clearly who arrives with a real C2 level and who arrives with a stretched C1.
At this level the exam does not ask whether you understand, it asks whether you can tell the difference. The Reading options differ by tone, irony or implication, not by content. Effective preparation is not doing more tests: it is reading and listening to dense native material for months. That is why the format is termly, not intensive.
The scale reaches 230. The pass starts at 200.
Cambridge English Scale, band 180 to 230, the highest of the scale.

| 200 – 212 | Grade C | C2 Proficiency certificate |

What each paper assesses and where Spanish speakers slip
| Paper | What it assesses | Common trap for Spanish speakers |
|---|---|---|
| Reading & Use of English | Precision and nuance in an educated register | Choosing the "generally correct" option instead of the exact one in context: here they all sound right |
| Writing | Synthesis, critical evaluation and command of text genre | Summarising the two Part 1 texts without evaluating them: half the task is offering a reasoned view |
| Listening | Tone, irony, attitude and implication | Catching WHAT is said but not WHAT is implied |
| Speaking | Naturalness, precision and the ability to argue on the spot | Sounding rehearsed: at C2, memorised fluency is penalised against real conversation |

In B2 First you can leave with a B1; here, between 180 and 199 you receive a C1-level certificate, but below 180 there is no certificate. You do not come to the C2 Proficiency to try your luck: you come with a solid C1 already achieved.
Cambridge gives it no expiry.
Valid indefinitely.
The C2 Proficiency certificate has no official expiry date set by Cambridge. Once obtained, the document is valid indefinitely.
But that is only half the story: who decides whether to accept your certificate, and for how long, is the institution, company or university that asks for it, not Cambridge or ULIC. Most public exams and selection processes in Spain accept it with no age limit; international mobility programmes and some bodies do require a maximum age, usually 2 years.
In practice, the C2 is the certificate you will need to renew least often: it is the last English exam most candidates ever take.
Confirm the exact requirement with whoever demands it before assuming it is valid forever in your case.
Price, sittings and real uses.
Where C1 is already what is expected.
Top language accreditation in public exams and teaching pools, a requirement or merit in philology, translation and interpreting, university teaching and bilingual programmes, and a distinguishing credential in international professional profiles.
With few sittings a year, missing the deadline costs months, not weeks.
If your goal has a date (a public exam, an academic year), count backwards from the sitting: at least a term of preparation plus the registration deadline.
We arrange your enrolment with ExamsOne, the official exam centre (ES945). You pay the official candidate fee, no surcharges: 229.50 €.
C2 Proficiency versus C1, IELTS and Linguaskill. When you actually need a C2.
| C2 Proficiency | C1 Advanced | IELTS Academic | New Linguaskill | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Type of result | Fixed-level C2 certificate (Grade A, B, C) | Fixed-level C1 certificate (reaches C2 with 200+) | Band 0-9 (8.5+ equals C2) | Multi-level B1-C2 certificate, 140-210 scale |
| Best for | The top credential: teaching, philology, public-exam merits | The demanding professional and academic standard | Studying or working abroad | Certifying your level on a tight deadline |
| Speaking format | Face to face, in a pair, two examiners | Face to face, in a pair, two examiners | Face to face, one to one | Recorded, hybrid marking |
| Standout feature | The highest certificate there is, since 1913 | A 200+ in the C1 Advanced already certifies C2 | Granular result by skill | Results in days, repeatable modules |
| Perception in Spain | Elite: few hold it, everyone recognises it | Very strong and far more common | Associated with international mobility | Growing since its 2025 relaunch |

When the C2 is a named merit or requirement (teaching pools, philology, translation), when you already hold a solid C1 and want to close your English accreditation for good, or when you compete on ground where C1 is the norm and you need what is not.
When your real requirement is a C1 (the C1 Advanced is cheaper to prepare and, with 200+, also certifies C2), when you need to certify a level in weeks (the New Linguaskill certifies up to C2 in days, with no fixed sitting), or when your destination is a foreign university or a visa that asks for IELTS by name.
Maybe you do not need this exam. And we will say so.
A C1 Advanced at 200 or more already certifies C2 on the Cambridge scale, and the New Linguaskill reaches C2 in days, with no fixed sitting. We prepare and examine both at ULIC. If your case fits one of them better, we would rather tell you before you invest a term in the wrong exam.
See the guides for the other two paths.
Check whether the C2 Proficiency fits your goal.
The C2 fits.
- +You are sitting a public exam or work in teaching and the C2 counts as a merit or sets you apart in the pool.
- +You come from philology, translation or interpreting, where the C2 is the profile's natural accreditation.
- +You already have the C1 Advanced (or a solid equivalent level) and want to close your English accreditation for life.
- +You work in an international environment where C1 is expected and you need the credential that decides.
- +You teach English and want the certificate that backs your authority before students and schools.
Better another path.
- ·Your requirement says C1: the C1 Advanced covers it and, with 200 points or more, also certifies C2.
- ·You need the accreditation within weeks: the new Linguaskill reaches C2 with results in days.
- ·Your destination is a foreign university or a visa that names IELTS or TOEFL.
- ·Your real level today is B2-C1: enrolling for the C2 without the foundation is paying to fall just short, because below 180 there is no certificate.

The most common questions about the C2 Proficiency.
Two long-haul formats. No intensive.
The C2 is not won with exam tricks: it is won with months of exposure to dense English and expert correction of Writing and Speaking, the two papers where a stretched C1 is exposed. That is why for this exam we offer the two long-haul formats, and deliberately not the pre-exam intensive.
Termly Course
33 hours per term working on the educated register, the Part 1 essay and full mock exams under real conditions up to the sitting. Writing and Speaking marked against the official criteria.
One to One
Long-haul individual sessions focused on your real ceiling, usually synthesis Writing and nuance in Reading. A diagnostic before fixing a sitting and correction against the examiner's official criteria.
