One exam. The C1 of teaching pools.
A C1 with no asterisks: designed for that level, not extrapolated up to it.
Aptis ESOL Advanced is the high variant of the British Council's multi-level exam: five computer-based papers (grammar and vocabulary plus the four skills) designed specifically to measure the C1 and C2 levels precisely. It is regulated by Ofqual and shares with Aptis General the multi-level mechanics, the 48-72 hour results and the digital certificate, but its tasks are longer, denser and built to discriminate in the high band.
In Spain it is the teachers' exam: the fast, economical route to certify the C1 required by teaching pools, language accreditation for bilingual programmes and public exams that award points for a high level. And unlike the Aptis General C1, which several universities have internally downgraded to B2, the Advanced C1 is the one institutions accept without dispute within the Aptis ecosystem.
A C1 with no asterisks
Advanced is designed for C1 and C2, not extrapolated up to them. It is the difference between certifying a level and having to defend it.
Speed and price in the high band
Results in 48-72 hours and a fee of around €106: the cheapest official C1/C2 in Spain, at a third of a fixed-level exam.
Multi-level with no risk
There is no fail: if you do not reach C1 on exam day, the certificate reflects your real level. A bad day is not a lost fee.
Five computer-based papers, with a 60-minute Reading.
The whole exam is computer-based at an official venue, with the Speaking recorded. All five papers are taken in one session. The mechanics are those of Aptis General; the level, length and density of the tasks are not.
Aptis Advanced is multi-level: there is no pass or fail. Each skill receives a score of 0 to 50 and a CEFR level, with tasks calibrated to discriminate in the C1-C2 band. Below that, the certificate reflects the level demonstrated.
| Paper | Content | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Core: Grammar & Vocabulary | 50 quick high-level grammar and vocabulary questions | 25 min |
| Reading | 4 tasks on long, dense texts: matching statements to authors, headings, text gaps | 60 min |
| Listening | 4 parts; the first two are heard twice, the last two only once | ~30 min |
| Writing | Argumentative essay with a formal structure and advanced vocabulary | 45 min |
| Speaking | 3 recorded tasks: comparing photos with questions, a presentation on experiences, a presentation with pros and cons | ~15 min |

The 60-minute Reading is the longest paper in the entire Aptis range and where Advanced really separates from General: texts in a dense academic and journalistic register, with textual-architecture tasks. Those coming from preparing General tend to underestimate it and it is where the most C1 candidates end up at B2.
In the Listening, the last two parts are heard only once. It is the only moment of the exam with no second chance, and where an ear trained on real native material, not textbook recordings, makes the difference between C1 and C2.
0 to 50 per skill, calibrated for the C1-C2 band.
CEFR level per skill.
0 to 50 points per skill, with a CEFR level per skill and an overall level. Designed for the C1-C2 band: below that, the certificate reflects the level demonstrated that day.
Certifies up to C2.
C2 per skill or overall is the exam ceiling: certification of the maximum level with validity within the Aptis ecosystem. The target result for most, however, is C1.
What your result means
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| C2 per skill or overall | The exam ceiling: certification of the maximum level with validity in the Aptis ecosystem. |
| C1 | The target result for most: teaching pools, bilingual accreditation, public-exam merits. |
| B2 or lower | It is not a fail: the certificate reflects the real level demonstrated that day. |

Aptis General measures accurately up to B2 and extrapolates its C1, which is why universities like Seville or Granada count it internally as B2 from the 2025-26 academic year. Advanced is built the other way round: its tasks are calibrated to discriminate between B2, C1 and C2. If your process accepts Aptis and asks you for C1, this is the Aptis that certifies it without dispute. Even so, the usual rule: confirm in your specific process which certificates it accepts before booking.
What each paper assesses, and where marks are lost
| Paper | What it assesses | Common trap for Spanish speakers |
|---|---|---|
| Core | High-level grammar and vocabulary against the clock | Getting complacent from a classroom C1: here the vocabulary is press-level and formal register |
| Reading | Architecture of dense texts over 60 minutes | Managing your energy badly: it is an endurance run, not a sprint |
| Listening | Nuance and attitude, with single-play recordings at the end | Losing the single listen by taking notes on everything |
| Writing | Argumentative essay in a formal register | Arguing with the structure of bar-room opinion: at C1-C2 the architecture scores, not just the grammar |
| Speaking | Recorded presentations against the clock | Solid B2 answers when the task asks for C1 analysis: comparing is not describing twice |

Many teaching pools and processes set C1 as a minimum per skill, not just overall. A skill at B2 can leave you out even if the average is C1. Prepare all five papers, not the average.
No official expiry, but each process decides.
2 to 4 years, depending on the process.
The Aptis certificate has no expiry date set by the British Council, but each process decides how old it can be: in teaching pools and public exams, limits of 2 to 4 years are common.
Since December 2025 the certificate is issued only in digital format, verifiable online.
If your C1 is for a pool that opens each year, check the age rule of the latest published process before deciding when to sit. Certifying too early may force you to retake; too late may leave you out of the deadline.

Advanced has fewer dates than General: plan with weeks of margin, not days.
Book a place in the official examBefore booking, two checks and in this order: that your process accepts Aptis, and that for C1 it accepts (or requires) the Advanced variant. There are communities where General is enough for B2 but only Advanced counts for C1.
Main uses in Spain

There is a third variant worth knowing: Aptis ESOL for Teachers. It is Aptis General with educational contexts (classroom texts and situations), with the same papers, the same level ceiling and the same small print on the C1. Some teaching processes require it expressly instead of the General: if yours names it, sit that variant. For an undisputed teaching C1, the exam is still Aptis Advanced. At ULIC we prepare all three variants; for Teachers, in One to One format just like the Advanced.
- +When your pool, accreditation or public exam accepts Aptis and asks you for C1 or C2 with a tight deadline and budget.
- +When you want the C1 without the General's small print.
- +When you need a per-skill result because your process sets separate minimums.
- ·When your process names another exam: sit the one they ask for.
- ·When you want the most prestigious, long-lasting C1/C2 credential (Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency).
- ·When your destination is abroad (IELTS or TOEFL), or when your real requirement is a B2 and the General solves it more cheaply.
If your real requirement is a B2, this is not your exam.
Advanced is built for the high band: teachers and public-exam candidates who need an undisputed C1 or C2. If what you are asked for is a B2, the Aptis General solves it more cheaply and with more dates. And if you want the most prestigious C1/C2 credential for your résumé, the exam is Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency. We would rather tell you straight before you pay more than you need to.
We help you choose the right certificate.
Tell us your goal and we will tell you straight whether Aptis Advanced, Aptis General, Cambridge or Linguaskill is right for you.
Check whether the Aptis Advanced fits your goal.
The Aptis Advanced fits.
- +You are a teacher or supply teacher and your pool or bilingual accreditation requires a certified C1 with a fixed deadline.
- +You are sitting a teaching public exam and C1/C2 counts as a requirement or merit in your community.
- +You need the C1 that Aptis General no longer guarantees before your university or administration.
- +You want to certify C2 without the cost or the sitting wait of a fixed-level exam.
- +Your process sets per-skill minimums and you need a broken-down result.
Better another exam.
- ·Your requirement is B2: the Aptis General solves it more cheaply and with more dates.
- ·You want long-lasting prestige for your résumé: Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency.
- ·Your process names another exam explicitly.
- ·Your destination is a foreign university or a visa: IELTS or TOEFL.
The most common questions about the Aptis Advanced.
One format to prepare the Aptis Advanced with us.
The Aptis Advanced is decided on three fronts the General does not have: a 60-minute Reading with dense texts, a formal essay where architecture scores and a Speaking that asks for analysis, not description. That jump is trained in bespoke individual sessions, which is why for Advanced we offer exactly one format.
Your pool asks for a real C1. Train the exam that certifies it.
You already know what the Aptis Advanced measures, why its C1 is not disputed and where the level is decided. What is left is individual training against the high-band criteria. At ULIC we have done it since 2010, with mock exams under the same conditions as the real exam. And you register for the official exam with us too.
