§ 02 · What it is and what it is for

The B2 First certifies a level. With lifetime validity from Cambridge.

One exam. A door that stays open.

The Cambridge B2 First, historically known as the FCE, is the CEFR B2-level English certificate issued by Cambridge Assessment English. It is one of the most recognised in Spain: accepted for public-sector exams, as a university requirement and in private selection processes.

In Spain it is the most requested certificate for accrediting a B2 level: required for university graduation at most universities, accepted in public-administration exams and valued in private selection processes. The B2 First is issued by one of the most recognised institutions in the world. That is hard to match with other certificates.

Anyone who scores 180 points or more on the B2 First automatically receives a C1 certificate, without sitting the C1 Advanced. It is the only way to obtain two levels of the same certification in a single exam.

Use · 01

Spanish and European university

A graduation requirement at most universities. Also valid for Erasmus, scholarships and master's entry.

Use · 02

Public-sector exams and public administration

Recognised as official B2-level accreditation in competitive exams for teachers, technicians and general bodies of the Spanish administration.

Use · 03

Face-to-face Speaking

Speaking is assessed in a real conversation with another candidate and two examiners, not in front of a computer recording as in the TOEFL or Aptis.

§ 03 · Exam format

Four skills. Two sessions.

The written papers (Reading & Use of English, Writing and Listening) take place in a single session. Speaking is held in a separate session, in a pair with another candidate, with two examiners present.

Skill Parts Items Time Weight
Reading & Use of English 7 parts: reading comprehension and grammar/vocabulary tasks (cloze, word formation, key word transformations). 52 1 h 15 min 40 %
Writing 2 tasks. Part 1: compulsory essay (140 to 190 words). Part 2: a choice of article, email/letter, report or review. 2 1 h 20 min 20 %
Listening 4 parts: monologues, conversations and multiple choice. Each recording is played twice. 30 ~40 min 20 %
Speaking 4 parts in a pair: initial interview, photo description, collaborative task and discussion. 2 examiners: interlocutor and assessor. 4 partes 14 min 20 %

Swipe horizontally to see the full table.

Speaking: paired exam

The B2 First Speaking is always taken in a pair with another candidate. There are two examiners: the interlocutor runs the test and the assessor observes and marks. This sets it apart from the TOEFL, where Speaking is a recording in front of a computer.

Paper or digital: same value

The B2 First can be taken on paper (paper-based) or on computer (computer-based). The content, scoring and certificate value are identical. Speaking is always in person with an examiner, whatever the format.

§ 04 · B2 First versions

One certificate, two versions.

The Cambridge B2 First comes in two versions: the standard and the for Schools. The content, format, scoring scale and certificate value are identical. The only difference is the subject matter of the texts and exam examples.

§ 06 · Scoring system

The Cambridge English Scale: 140 to 190.

CES scale · Cambridge English Scale

A scale shared by every Cambridge exam.

The Cambridge English Scale (CES) runs from 80 to 230 and is the same for all Cambridge exams: B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency. Each exam occupies its corresponding range. The B2 First occupies the 140 to 190 range.

What decides your certificate

The overall score determines the level.

The overall score is the average of the four skills on the CES scale. The level shown on the certificate depends on which range that overall score falls into. You do not need to pass every skill separately.

CES score CEFR level Certificate issued
180 – 190C1Cambridge C1 Advanced Certificate (automatic, no additional exam)
160 – 179B2Cambridge B2 First Certificate (pass)
140 – 159B1Cambridge B1 Certificate of Level (B2 not passed, but B1 is certified)
< 140No certificate. A Statement of Results is issued with the score.

The detail that changes everything · automatic C1

Anyone who scores 180 points or more on the B2 First automatically receives the Cambridge C1 Advanced Certificate, a level above the one they sat. No additional exam. No additional cost. It is one of the most valuable features of the Cambridge system and has no equivalent in the TOEFL, IELTS or Aptis.

Scores by skill

Skill What it assesses Common trap for Spanish speakers
Reading & UoEReading comprehension and command of grammar and vocabulary. The Use of English tasks (cloze, word formation, key word transformations) are predictable and trainable.Speed: 52 questions in 75 minutes. Many candidates do not finish in time.
WritingStructured written production: an argumentative essay and a free-choice text in the requested format.Wrong register: each text type (article, report, email) has its own structure and register. Confusing them lowers the mark.
ListeningComprehension of monologues and conversations with different accents. Each part is played twice.Relying too much on the standard accent. The exam includes regional British accents.
SpeakingFluency, grammatical accuracy, vocabulary, pronunciation and discourse management in a pair.Prolonged silence is penalised. Part 3 (collaborative task) requires starting and sustaining a conversation, not just answering.

§ 07 · Certificate validity

Official validity: lifetime from Cambridge.

No official expiry, but with important nuances.

Cambridge sets no expiry date on the B2 First. Once obtained, the document itself is valid indefinitely. But that is only half the story.

Who decides whether to accept your certificate, and for how long, is the institution, company or university that asks for it, not Cambridge or ULIC. Most public-sector exams and selection processes in Spain accept it with no age limit. Other contexts, such as international mobility programmes or visas, may require a maximum age. Always confirm the exact requirement with whoever asks for it before you enrol.

Important · Confirm the exact requirement

Before enrolling on the assumption that the B2 First covers your need, confirm the exact requirement with the institution, company or university that requires it. Most accept it with no age limit, but not all contexts are the same. It is something a candidate can easily verify.

An honest read

If your goal is Spain, the B2 First is probably the right choice.

For exclusively Spanish use, the combination of maximum recognition in Spain, face-to-face Speaking and the automatic C1 makes the B2 First the most sensible option for most candidates. If your destination is a university in the US, the TOEFL makes more sense. If you need a certificate for immigration to Australia or the UK, the IELTS is the standard. We would rather tell you straight before you invest in the wrong exam.

§ 10 · Who it is for

Check whether the B2 First fits your goal.

It is for you if

The B2 First fits.

  • +You need to certify a B2 level to graduate from a Spanish university.
  • +You are sitting a public-sector exam that requires official B2 accreditation (teachers, administration, healthcare).
  • +You prefer to demonstrate your level to a human examiner in a real conversation, not to a computer.
  • +You want a fixed-level certificate you do not have to retake within a few years to keep it valid before most Spanish institutions.
  • +You have a chance of exceeding 180 points and are interested in going for the automatic C1.
Consider another option if

There may be a better-suited exam.

  • ·Your goal is a university in the US or Canada. The TOEFL carries more weight there.
  • ·You need the certificate to apply for a work or residence visa in Australia or the UK. The IELTS is the standard for immigration.
  • ·You need results in less than a week. The TOEFL delivers in 72 hours.
  • ·The company or administration specifically asks for Aptis or Linguaskill for its internal processes.

The most common questions about the Cambridge B2 First.

It certifies that the candidate can use English independently in everyday, academic and professional contexts.
Cambridge sets no expiry date on the B2 First. Once obtained, the document is valid indefinitely. The Cambridge English Scale (CES) runs from 140 to 190 for the B2 First. To obtain the B2-level certificate you need an overall score of 160 or more. If you score between 140 and 159 you receive a B1-level certificate; if you score 180 or more, you automatically receive the C1 certification.

The written papers last 3 hours and 15 minutes in total: Reading and Use of English (1h 15min), Writing (1h 20min) and Listening (roughly 40 minutes), all in a single session. Speaking lasts 14 minutes and is held in a separate session, in a pair with another candidate.
The fee varies by exam centre. In Spain the approximate price is 200 to 230 euros. Check directly with the centre for the exact amount of the current sitting.
Speaking lasts 14 minutes, is taken in a pair with another candidate and with two examiners present: one runs the test (interlocutor) and the other marks (assessor). It has 4 parts: initial interview, describing and comparing photographs, a collaborative task and a discussion.
Roughly 3 to 4 weeks in paper format, and around 2 weeks in digital (computer-based) format. The printed certificate takes around 6 weeks to become available.
The content, format and scoring are identical. B2 First for Schools uses topics adapted to younger students (school life, hobbies, etc.); the standard uses adult-life topics. The certificate's value before universities and employers is the same.
