§ 02 · What it is and what it is for

One exam. The official shortcut for public exams.

There is no pass or fail: each process sets the minimum level it requires.

Aptis ESOL General is the British Council's multi-level exam: a 100% computer-based test that assesses the four skills plus a grammar and vocabulary module, and places your level between A1 and C1 with a score of 0 to 50 per skill. It is regulated by Ofqual, the British qualifications body, and results arrive in 48-72 hours with a digital certificate.

In Spain it is the exam of the education administration: it is accepted by 16 autonomous communities, over 40 universities and the CRUE, and it is the star certificate in public exams and pools where you must prove B1 or B2 quickly and without breaking the bank. Its fee is around €92, a fraction of what a fixed-level exam costs.

Pillar · 01

Speed and price

Results in 48-72 hours and a fee of around €92. For public-exam and pool deadlines, the cost-to-certificate ratio is hard to beat.

Pillar · 02

Multi-level with no risk

There is no fail: the certificate reflects the level you demonstrate, from A1 to C1. A bad day gives you a lower level, not a zero.

Pillar · 03

The exam of the administration

Designed and used on a large scale for accreditation in the Spanish public sector: teaching processes, pools and accreditation.

§ 03 · Exam format

Five computer-based papers, in a single session.

The whole exam is computer-based at an official venue, with the Speaking recorded via microphone. All five papers are taken in one session: a grammar and vocabulary Core plus the four skills.

How it works

Aptis General is multi-level: there is no pass or fail. Each skill receives a score of 0 to 50 and a CEFR level, and the exam places your overall level between A1 and C1. The grammar and vocabulary Core has no level of its own, but adjusts the overall mark.

Structural note

The grammar and vocabulary Core has no CEFR level of its own: it adjusts the overall mark alongside the four skills. It is the paper most candidates give away by not preparing it, because it is "only" grammar. In an exam where every skill counts, 50 questions in 25 minutes are too many points to improvise.

Practical note

Writing task 4 (the formal and informal email on the same situation) is where the B2 is decided: the content can be almost identical, what is assessed is that you switch register naturally. It is trained in a week and always failed without training.

§ 04 · Scoring system

0 to 50 per skill, with the small print of its C1.

Scale · 0 to 50

CEFR level per skill.

0 to 50 points per skill, with a CEFR level per skill (A1 to C1) and an overall level. Multi-level: no pass or fail. The certificate reflects the level you demonstrate on exam day.

Since September 2024

The automatic C1 above B2.

A result above B2 in Aptis General directly issues an "Aptis ESOL C1" certificate. That C1, however, has small print that this page tells you in full below.

What your result means

Result What it means
Overall level A1-C1The weighted average of the skills, adjusted by the Core.
Level per skillEach skill receives its own CEFR: useful when a process requires per-skill minimums.
Since September 2024A result above B2 directly issues an "Aptis ESOL C1" certificate.

The small print of the C1, told in full

Since the 2025-26 academic year, several Spanish universities (Seville and Granada among them) have decided to count the Aptis General C1 internally as a B2. The underlying reason: Aptis General is designed to measure accurately up to B2, and its C1 is an extrapolation that not all institutions accept. The practical consequence: if your goal is to certify B1 or B2, Aptis General is an excellent choice; if your goal is a C1 that no one disputes, your exam is Aptis Advanced or another C1-level certificate. ALWAYS confirm in your specific process which certificate and level it accepts.

What each paper assesses, and where marks are lost

WritingFormal versus informal registerWriting both task 4 emails in the same tone
SpeakingRecorded fluency against the clockFalling short or running over because you did not rehearse with a clock

Swipe horizontally to see the full table.

Special rule · Per-skill minimums

Being multi-level there is no fail, but public processes usually set a minimum level AND per skill. Read your process: an overall B2 with a B1 in Speaking may not count for you.

§ 05 · Certificate validity

No official expiry, but each process decides.

2 to 4 years, depending on the process.

The Aptis certificate has no expiry date set by the British Council, but the institution that asks for it decides how old it can be, and in public exams and pools it is common to find limits of 2 to 4 years depending on the process.

Since December 2025 the certificate is issued only in digital format, verifiable online, which makes it simpler to submit in online processes.

Important

Do not assume your certificate is valid forever in a specific context. In public exams, each year's process can change the age rule. Confirm it in the BOE or regional bulletin of your process before taking the certificate as valid.

The decision in one sentence

General measures accurately up to B2 and is the fast, cheap route for B1/B2; Advanced is designed for C1 and C2 and is the one institutions accept without dispute in that band. The expensive mistake is getting a "C1" in General and discovering your university counts it as B2.

See the full Aptis Advanced guide
When to choose Aptis General
  • +When your process or public exam asks for B1 or B2 and accepts Aptis (16 communities do).
  • +When the deadline is tight and you need a certificate in days, not weeks.
  • +When budget rules and €92 solves what other exams charge triple for.
When not to choose Aptis General
  • ·When you need a C1 with no small print: Aptis Advanced, C1 Advanced or the new Linguaskill.
  • ·When your process names another exam explicitly.
  • ·When your destination is abroad (IELTS or TOEFL) or you want fixed-level prestige (Cambridge B2 First).
An honest read

If your requirement is a C1 that no one disputes, this is not your exam.

For B1 or B2 with a short deadline and a tight budget, Aptis General is hard to beat. But if your process asks for a C1 and you want it accepted without dispute, the exam is Aptis Advanced or another C1-level certificate. We would rather tell you straight before you get a "C1" your university counts as B2.

Tell us your goal and we will tell you straight whether Aptis General, Aptis Advanced, Linguaskill or Cambridge is right for you.

§ 09 · Who is it for?

Check whether the Aptis General fits your goal.

It is for you if

The Aptis General fits.

  • +You are sitting a public exam or in a pool in a community that accepts Aptis and are asked for B1 or B2 with a fixed deadline.
  • +You need to certify B2 to graduate or enter a master's at a university that accepts it.
  • +You want the fastest, cheapest official certificate that covers your requirement, without paying for prestige your process does not value.
  • +You are applying to public-sector processes where Aptis is the de facto standard.
  • +You need a per-skill result because your process sets separate minimums.
Consider another option if

Better another exam.

  • ·Your requirement is a C1: the Aptis General C1 is no longer accepted at several universities. Your exam is Aptis Advanced or another C1-level certificate.
  • ·Your process names another exam: sit exactly the one they ask for.
  • ·Your destination is a foreign university or a visa: IELTS or TOEFL.
  • ·You want a long-lasting credential for your résumé: a fixed-level Cambridge certificate carries more weight.
§ 10 · Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about the Aptis General.

The British Council's multi-level exam: five computer-based papers (grammar and vocabulary plus the four skills) that place your level between A1 and C1, with results in 48-72 hours and a digital certificate. It is regulated by Ofqual.
Neither: it is multi-level. The certificate reflects the level you demonstrate in each skill and an overall level.
It is its natural territory: it is accepted by 16 autonomous communities and is the most used certificate in teaching processes and pools that ask for B1 or B2. Always read your specific process: it rules.
It depends on who asks for it, and this is the most important question on this page. Since September 2024 a result above B2 issues an "Aptis ESOL C1" certificate, but since the 2025-26 academic year several universities (Seville and Granada among them) count it internally as a B2. If you need an undisputed C1, your exam is Aptis Advanced or another C1-level certificate.
General measures accurately up to B2 (its C1 is the special case in the previous question) and Advanced is designed for C1 and C2, with longer, more complex tasks. If your goal is B1/B2, General; if it is C1/C2, Advanced.
The fee is around €92 with the British Council, one of the lowest on the market. The Advanced one is around €106.
In 48-72 hours by email. Since December 2025 the certificate is digital only, verifiable online: there is no longer a paper certificate.
At British Council venues and partner centres; in Madrid there are several dates a month and registration is online.
Recorded: you speak to a computer with a microphone for about 12 minutes, in four tasks with a fixed time per response. There is no live examiner. The clock is half the exam: you train with a clock or you fail with a clock.
The grammar and vocabulary paper: 50 questions in 25 minutes. It receives no CEFR level of its own but adjusts the overall mark. It is the paper most people give away by not preparing it.
The British Council sets no expiry, but each process decides how old it can be, and in public exams limits of 2 to 4 years are common. Confirm it in your process.
Yes, with no limit on attempts and continuous dates. With results in 72 hours, the retake cycle is weeks, not months.
It is not its territory: for foreign universities and visas, the standards are IELTS and TOEFL. Aptis is an accreditation exam for the Spanish system and for institutions that expressly recognise it.
Many set them: an overall B2 with a B1 in one skill may not count. Read your process and prepare all four skills, not just the average.
A valid ID document, the same one you registered with.
Yes: Pre-Exam Intensive Course in the weeks before your date, with full computer-based mock exams, or One to One to target the skill that separates you from the level.
The Aptis General variant with educational contexts: same papers, same duration, same level ceiling and same C1 small print, but with classroom texts and situations. Some teaching processes require it expressly; if yours names it, sit that variant. At ULIC we prepare it the same as the General.
Yes. Write to us and we arrange your place in the official exam, just as we do for our candidates, and if you like you prepare for the exam with us while your date comes up.
