§ 01 · Key facts

Quick facts on the C1 Advanced.

§ 02 · What it is and what it is for

One certificate. The one that sets applications apart.

One exam. The real threshold of demanding processes.

The Cambridge C1 Advanced (formerly known as CAE, Certificate in Advanced English) certifies the C1 level of the Common European Framework. It is issued by Cambridge University Press & Assessment, the same institution behind B2 First and C2 Proficiency, and is accepted by thousands of universities, companies and administrations worldwide. It is the most in-demand Cambridge certificate among adults in Spain, and not as a fad: it is the level that demanding processes have turned into their real threshold.

In Spain, the C1 is where English stops being a box to tick and becomes a merit that decides: the language accreditation for bilingual programmes, the teaching pools and public exams that award points for a high level, the master's degrees that ask for C1 by name and the selection processes where every finalist already holds a B2. And it has a unique property in this band: with 200 points or more, Cambridge certifies you directly at C2, without sitting another exam.

Pillar · 01

The standard where B2 is no longer enough

Bilingual accreditation, teaching pools, demanding master's degrees, international selection: the processes that really filter have moved the bar to C1, and this is the certificate Spain uses to prove it.

Pillar · 02

One exam, two ceilings

From 200 points you receive the C2 certification directly. The strong candidate does not need to choose between C1 and C2 before sitting: the result decides for them.

Pillar · 03

ULIC prepares you and handles everything with ExamsOne, the official exam centre (ES945): registration, payment and preparation with three formats to choose from.

§ 03 · Exam format

Structural note

Reading and Use of English is worth 40% of the final mark, and its Parts 6 and 7 do not exist in the B2 First: contrasting four authors and reconstructing a long text are new reading skills the candidate moving up from B2 has never trained. It is the number one reason a high B2 does not turn into a C1 on its own.

Practical note

56 questions in 90 minutes with longer texts than in B2: the clock squeezes harder than the level. Part 4 (transformations) packs the most value per minute, and Parts 5 to 8 punish slow readers. Paper management is trained with full timed mock exams, not improvised on exam day.

§ 04 · Scoring system

The pass starts at 180. From 200, it certifies C2.

Special rule · and it works both ways

Upwards, from 200 points the certificate accredits C2 directly, with no other exam. Downwards, between 160 and 179 you receive an official B2 certificate instead of a fail. The C1 Advanced has the widest useful range in the entire Cambridge catalogue: from a certified B2 to a certified C2, depending on your result on the day.

§ 05 · Certificate validity

Cambridge gives it no expiry.

Valid indefinitely.

The C1 Advanced certificate has no official expiry date set by Cambridge. Once obtained, the document is valid indefinitely.

But that is only half the story: who decides whether to accept your certificate, and for how long, is the institution, company or university that asks for it, not Cambridge or ULIC. Most public exams, pools and selection processes in Spain accept it with no age limit; international mobility programmes and some institutions do require a maximum age, usually 2 years.

Important

Do not assume your certificate is valid forever in a specific context.

Confirm the exact requirement with whoever demands it before assuming it is sorted.

§ 06 · The C1 Advanced in Spain

Price, sittings and real uses.

Price (ULIC) 219 The official candidate fee, arranged with ExamsOne (ES945), no surcharges. The market reference runs around 230 to 260 € by centre and format. Late entry adds a 35 € surcharge.
Sittings Frequent Along with the B2 First, the exam with the most dates in the Cambridge calendar, on paper and computer. The deadline closes 4 to 6 weeks before on paper and slightly less on computer. May, June, November and December fill up first. Ask us for the Madrid dates and we confirm your place.
Results 26 sem Between 2 and 3 weeks on computer and 4 to 6 on paper. The physical certificate arrives later by post.
Main uses in Spain

Where B2 no longer sets you apart.

Language accreditation for bilingual programmes, teaching pools and public exams that require or award points for C1, an entry requirement for master's and doctoral programmes, selection processes where B2 no longer sets you apart, and level accreditation for university teaching.

Practical note

The C1 candidate's costliest calendar mistake is chaining preparation and sitting badly: whoever decides in September "I'll sit this year" and does not fix a sitting until spring gives away months.

Fix the exam date first, and let the date organise the preparation. That is what the registration box on this page is for.

The price is ours, not a reference

We arrange your enrolment with ExamsOne, the official exam centre (ES945). You pay the official candidate fee, no surcharges: 219 €.

When to choose the C1 Advanced

When your process is Spanish and demanding (bilingual teaching accreditation, teaching pools, master's, selection where B2 is everywhere), when you want the high-level certificate with the most recognition and no official expiry, when you are aiming for the C2 and would rather let the result decide (from 200 it certifies it), or when you value a face-to-face Speaking over recorded formats.

When not to choose the C1 Advanced

When your destination is a foreign university or professional body that asks for IELTS by name, when you need the certificate in days rather than weeks (Aptis Advanced or New Linguaskill reach the same level sooner), or when your real level today is a bare B2: the safety net would hand you a certified B2, but paying a C1 fee to walk away with a B2 is the expensive way to find out your level. Our level test does it free.

An honest read

Maybe your path lies elsewhere. And we will say so.

If you are coming from the B2 First, it is the step before this one and with 180+ it also certifies C1. If you are aiming for the C2 Proficiency, a 200+ on this exam already certifies it: the bridge works both ways. And if your destination is a foreign university or professional body, the standard they will name is IELTS Academic. All three are exams we also prepare and examine at ULIC: decide with the full picture, and the choice stays in-house.

Compare before you decide

See the guides for the other paths.

§ 08 · Who is it for?

Check whether the C1 Advanced fits your goal.

It is for you if

The C1 fits.

  • +You need language accreditation to teach in bilingual programmes, or your teaching pool or public exam requires or awards points for C1.
  • +Your master's or doctoral programme asks for a certified C1 by name.
  • +You compete in selection processes where every finalist already holds a B2 and you need what sets you apart.
  • +You have held the B2 First for years and your real English has grown: it is time the paper reflected it.
  • +You aim for C2: with 200 points this exam certifies it directly, and if you fall short, you leave with the C1.
Consider another option if

Better another path.

  • ·Your destination is a university or professional body abroad: IELTS Academic is the standard they will name.
  • ·You need the certificate within days: Aptis Advanced or the new Linguaskill certify the same level with results in hours or days.
  • ·Your real level today is a bare B2: prepare the jump first or sit the B2 First, which with 180+ also certifies the C1.
  • ·Your process names another exam: sit exactly the one they ask for.

§ 10 · Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about the C1 Advanced.

Cambridge sets no expiry on the certificate. Who decides whether to accept it, and how recent it must be, is the institution you present it to: most Spanish processes accept it with no limit, and some international programmes ask for results under 2 years old. Confirm it with whoever requires it.
Between 160 and 179 points you receive an official B2-level certificate, instead of a fail. Below 160 no certificate is issued.
Yes: with 200 points or more, the certificate accredits the C2 level directly. It is the exam's most valuable property for the strong candidate: one exam, two possible ceilings. If your stated goal is the C2, also see our C2 Proficiency guide and decide informed.
It is the biggest perceived jump in the catalogue: not only does the level rise, the skills change. Reading adds two parts that do not exist in B2 (contrasting four authors, reconstructing a long text) and Writing requires formatted genres (proposal, report). A high B2 does not turn into a C1 on its own: it is trained.
The written papers last 3 hours and 40 minutes in one session. Speaking, around 15 minutes per pair, is scheduled separately.
Yes, with another candidate and two examiners. Each candidate is assessed individually on their own performance, not against their partner.
With ULIC, the C1 Advanced fee is 219 €, with a 35 € surcharge for late entry. The market reference runs around 230 to 260 € by centre and format, so you pay the official centre fee with no intermediaries.
On computer, in 2-3 weeks; on paper, in 4-6. The physical certificate arrives later by post.
The content and scoring are identical. The computer format usually has faster results and shorter registration deadlines.
It is the go-to C1 certificate in those processes. Each region publishes its accreditation rules and each pool its scoring scale: confirm the current text of yours, and if it names another exam, sit that one.
It is among the most accepted certificates for C1 requirements in Spanish postgraduate study. For foreign universities, the standard they will name is IELTS: we have the guide.
It is, along with the B2 First, the exam with the most dates in the Cambridge calendar: frequent sittings in Madrid in both formats. Registration closes weeks before: May-June and November-December fill up first.
You are given notes on a debate with three points and must develop two and reach a reasoned decision, in 220-260 words. In Part 2 you choose between email or letter, proposal, report or review: the proposal and the report are where most candidates slip on format, not English.
Twice, in all four parts.
Reading and Use of English: worth 40%, double any other paper, with 56 questions in 90 minutes. And within it, the clock punishes more than the level: Parts 5 to 8 pack 26 dense reading questions at the end of the paper.
It is not a formal requirement, but it is the realistic baseline: the B2-C1 jump is big and measurable. Our level test tells you free how far off you are and which preparation format suits you.
It depends on your distance and your date: the Termly Course builds the level jump (33h per term), the Pre-Exam Intensive sharpens technique in the run-up weeks, and One to One targets a specific skill. It is the only exam, along with the B2 First, where we offer all three: the level test decides which.
A valid DNI, NIE or passport, the same one you used to enrol.
Yes. We handle your registration with ExamsOne, the official Cambridge exam centre (ES945). Write to us: we confirm sitting, deadline and candidate fee, and you prepare with us if you like.

Three formats. One for every distance.

The C1 Advanced is the exam where ULIC deploys all three formats, because the B2-C1 jump has two distinct problems that call for distinct tools: building the level (months) and mastering exam technique (weeks). The level test says which of the two is yours, and the format is chosen accordingly, not from a catalogue.
